Development of Direction Selectivity Through Hebbian Modification

چکیده
Zero-sum Hebbian learning rules that reinforce well correlated inputs have been used by others to model the competitive self-organization of afferents from the lateral geniculate nucleus to produce orientation selectivity and ocular dominance columns. However, the application of these simple Hebbian rules to the development of direction selectivity (DS) is problematic because the best correlated inputs are those that are well correlated in both the preferred and nonpreferred direct ions of motion. Such afferents would combine to produce non-DS cortical units. Afferents that are in spatiotemporal quadrature would combine to produce DS cortical units, but are poorly correlated in the nonpreferred direction. In this paper, the development of DS is reduced to the problem of associating a pair of units in spatiotemporal quadrature in the face of competition from a third, non-quadrature unit. As expected, simple Hebbian learning rules perform poorly at associating the quadrature pair. However, two additional Hebb-type learning rules, postsynaptic gating and BCM, improve performance. Results from this three-input model are shown to generalize to a larger network. We conclude that learning rules in which the postsynaptic response determines the magnitude and/or direction of synaptic change perform better than simple Hebbian rules at establishing direction selectivity.

Emerging feed-forward inhibition allows the robust formation of direction selectivity in the developing ferret visual cortex.
The computation of direction selectivity requires that a cell respond to joint spatial and temporal characteristics of the stimulus that cannot be separated into independent components. Direction selectivity in ferret visual cortex is not present at the time of eye opening but instead develops in the days and weeks following eye opening in a process that requires visual experience with moving s...
متن کاملA theory of the influence of eye movements on the refinement of direction selectivity in the cat's primary visual cortex.
Early in life, visual experience influences the refinement of the preferential response for specific stimulus features exhibited by neurons in the primary visual cortex. A striking example of this influence is the reduction in cortical direction selectivity observed in cats reared under high-frequency stroboscopic illumination. Although various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the matur...
متن کاملJoint maps for orientation, eye, and direction preference in a self-organizing model of V1
Primary visual cortex (V1) contains overlaid feature maps for orientation (OR), motion direction selectivity (DR), and ocular dominance (OD). Neurons in these maps are connected laterally in patchy, long-range patterns that follow the feature preferences. Using the LISSOM model, we show for the first time how realistic laterally connected joint OR/OD/DR maps can self-organize from Hebbian learn...
متن کاملTwo symmetry breaking mechanisms for the development of orientation selectivity in a neural system
Orientation selectivity is a remarkable feature of the neurons located in the primary visual cortex. Provided that the visual neurons acquire orientation selectivity through activity-dependent Hebbian learning, the development process could be understood as a kind of symmetry breaking phenomenon in the view of physics. The key mechanisms of the development process are examined here in a neural ...
متن کاملA Linear Hebbian Model for the Development of Spatiotemporal Receptive Fields of Simple Cells
We propose a linear Hebbian model that describes the development of spatiotemporal receptive elds as a competition between four types of input onto a cortical cell, viz., non-lagged ON and OFF inputs and lagged ON and OFF inputs. The outcome of the development is determined mainly by the spatial and the temporal correlations between the diierent inputs. We indicate what type of input correlatio...
